Emmanuel Mieville

Emmanuel Mieville was born in Paris and composes since 1986. He studied music at the GRM (Groupe de recherches musicales) with Jacques Lejeune and Philippe Mion, and trained as a sound engineer at the Louis Lumière School — studies that shaped his affinity for sound material and its malleable transformations. Listening to documentaries and radio art led him toward musique concrète and musical freedom, while his travels became opportunities to train his ear in diverse environments.

After working as a technician (concert recording, radio, and sound archive restoration), he dedicated himself fully to composition. His research into perception and sound topology informs his phonographic practice and compositional style where decontextualized sounds — arranged into coalescing textures — transcend the dialectic between soundscape and memory.

Mieville studied Javanese Gamelan at the CNSM in Paris. He served as an executive producer for France Culture’s Atelier de Création Radiophonique and Résonances programs, and produced several creative workshops for France Musique. He recently took part in two workshops led by Chris Watson, and Francisco López.
