Limited release: Unique Clouds by Miguel Leal

Kant, I think, only looked at the sky in beautiful weather.
M. Serres

Clouds have always been objects of fascination with their arrogant complexity and their role as catalysts for the imagination. There being no way to precisely measure them or restrict their behaviour to a deterministic regime, they have been frequently seen as amorphous or formless objects, monstrosities or aberrations of nature, signs of the random noise of the world.

Clouds are always in a transitory state and for this reason we say that they do not have permanent qualities. In short, clouds do not have qualities and it is absurd to individually catalogue them.

Unique Clouds presents a limited series of 10 stamps. Each stamp includes a single drawing that can be reproduced unlimitedly, on any media, in any colour and in any position. Indeed, these stamps are unique works that can generate an infinity number of multiples.

--

Unique Clouds, by Miguel Leal, is part of the Limited Release series from Crónica and is the cover art for TUM M’s Is That You?. Each of the 10 signed and numbered pieces is available through Crónica.

--

A lot of hard work is invested in these releases and in Crónica’s operations. We do not believe in DRM and we certainly don’t want to create any barriers between you and our releases, so, for the time, and in experimental regime, all of the Unlimited Releases will be free to download, but if you can, please consider to leave us a small donation for the benefit of both artists and label. Don’t forget to leave us your address, so that we can send you a thank you postcard in return.

Crónicast 032, "Abibes" by Enrico Coniglio, 12'11", 14.1MB

“Abibes” is the name of an ex coastal depot of GPL, classifyed as an “high risk of accident area”, in Porto Maghera, a big industrial site at the door of the Venice lagoon (Italy).

I have recorded same samples from the environment with a binaural stereo mic, so use headphones for the best result. In a second time I’ve work on the recordings adding some guitar/synth drones treated with Cycling ’74 technology. Here is the result.

New release: Is That You?

As its 35th installment, Crónica is pleased to add to its well curated catalogue TU M’s "Is That You?"

"Is That You?" invites you to become a solo protagonist in an imaginary soundtrack. While embracing you in an ocean of orchestral delight, the delicate arrangements and the overall amplitude of the piece’s resonance carry you across a 23 minute drama full of beauty and intrigue.

Rossano Polidoro and Emiliano Romanelli’s improvised recordings stem from carefully written evocations of orchestral brass and wood colors which are later reprocessed live. TU M’s performance is yet another level of evocation, building concurrent arrays of sound flux full of instrumental warmth and vivid organics.

TU M’ are meager in words about their music, but this sparseness finds a balance in the expressivity of their music.

--

Tracklist:

1. Is
2. That
3. You?

--

With "Is That You?" we present the second release in the Limited Series of original artworks, especially produced for each digital release. The Limited counterpart of this Unlimited release is "Unique Clouds", a certified signed and numbered limited edition of 10 rubber stamps, produced for Crónica and TU M’ by the Portuguese artist Miguel Leal.

Clouds have always been objects of fascination with their arrogant complexity and their role as catalysts for the imagination.
Clouds are always in a transitory state and for this reason we say that they do not have permanent qualities. In short, clouds do not have qualities and it is absurd to individually catalogue them.

Each of the 10 signed and numbered pieces is available for 125€ (post included).

Crónicast 031, "Orla" by Carlos Santos, 28'07", 32.2MB

This audio piece is a full recording of a audiovisual concert called "memory", presented @ Bang Festival, FBAUL, Lisbon, on April 3, 2008. Audio by Carlos Santos and video by André Sier.

I renamed it “Orla” because the sound material deals with the notion of presence, something that’s concrete, that we take for granted in a audible way, but never presents itself in a fully open range, something near the threshold, as the video imagery accents that with its black canvas and small emerging white signs.

Cem Güney’s debut album Praxis is now available, the first Crónica release featuring the all new, all paper covers. We'd been studying for a while how could we replace the cumbersome and not too environmental-friendly jewel cases and, after a few months we finally managed to publish our first release in paper covers. Praxis features a cover illustration by Hugo Oliveira. Enjoy!

New release: Praxis

As our thirty-fourth installment, Crónica is delighted to present Cem Güney’s debut album Praxis.

An Ascription to Praxis

I am beholden to the harmoniousness of two essential properties that maintains the forcefullness of a cognition space. One, is a time-space continuum, stable in manner, having control over the undesired effects of duality and two, the synesthetic response, enrichining the transmutations from the abstract to the concrete. Synesthetic responses, via the many influences of sound contributes much as a motivational factor, and without the negative effects of duality-distractions so to speak-fluid impromtu motions (the essence of creation) can build up to constitute a language that becomes the basis of form.

Praxis, is the experimentations of the various emergent forms, and its application into the concrete.

Notes to Praxis:

A Phonetics Theme is an algorithmic composition, essentially composed with the intention to have any kind of appropriate media accompany it. It makes the use of African phonemes and words to tell a story. The story is dedicated to Sound Art.

base, matters, writing, besos, to gather, base, quality, sound, knead it, to pick up, beat, feal, beat, put into, twelve, cymbals, to dig, beat, si, rump, to grind fine, to beat, era, calling, strike, ear, take it, piece, to dance, field, festival, to spit out, beat, play music, push into, confusion [?], to descend, sound

Behold Now Bhikkus, The Sounds of Nada Yoga Nada Yoga means ‘union through sound’. It is the ancient spiritual art and science of inner transformation through sound and tone. Meditation on sound is one universal path to Self Realization, accessible to anyone, and appropriate for people of any religion.

Our mind easily becomes absorbed in sound. This is why we all-even infants and animals-enjoy listening to music. When the mind is fully concentrated on anything there arises a feeling of inner bliss. In Nada Yoga, we learn that the source of the sound may be external or internal. The sound may be gross or subtle. That is, it maybe ‘struck’ out loud (SA: ‘ahat’), as from a voice or musical instrument; or ‘unstruck’ and outwardly silent (SA: ‘anahat’), arising inwardly as from the subtle currents of energy or prana moving throughout the body.

With practice, concentration on carefully selected outer or ‘struck’ sounds will enable the mind to become calm and transparent. At this point you may begin to become aware of the subtle inner ‘unstruck’ sounds. You might perceive inner sounds that seem like bells, or flutes, or even a hum like an electrical transformer. Some of these sounds are actually just the sounds of your own body: blood pumping, or the electrical energy of nerves and inner ear. Other, deeper, sounds are the ‘sounds behind the audible sound’. It is into this deeper realm that Nada Yoga can take you.

One of the techniques used to practice Nada Yoga is ‘toning’. Toning is the creation of extended vocal sounds on a single vowel in order to experience the sound and its effects in other parts of the body. No melody, no words, no rhythm, and no harmony - just the sound of the vibrating breath.

There are many vowel sounds in the human language. As for the application of ‘Behold Now Bhikkus, The Sounds of Nada Yoga’, I focused on several principal sounds and their combinations.

Vowels-Possible Attributes or Related Perceptions,

UU (’who’): awareness of physicality, sensation of depth; base of spine

OH (’go’): individuality, conscious self-image; solar plexus

AH (’car’): centering, expanding, pleasant heartfelt emotions; heart area

EE (’knee’): energizing, awakening; head

MM (humming, lips closed): balancing, harmonizing and integrating; the subtlest and most powerfull sound

Order of Applied Vowel Combinations,

uu-ah-ee-mm

uh-oh-ah-uu

Crónicast 027 features The Beautiful Schizophonic performing live in Passos Manuel, Porto.

--

Marvellous sweeping drones take us back to memories of deserted landscapes. This is the soundtrack of an impossible road movie, of simple complexities and multi-tonal melodic formations, geological oddities through wich we travel, while admiring their uniqueness. This is The Beautiful Schizophonic, performing live for the first time live in Portugal.

This performance was recorded December 12, 2007, at Passos Manuel, Porto. Thank you, and good night.

"A Chronicle of Crónica, around 5 years of it.

Mixed by Pedro Tudela and Miguel Carvalhais in February and March 2008.

We started Crónica in 2003. Originally intending to release both our work and that of a relatively close group of friends and artists, we have since produced and released work from artists a bit from all over the world. Along the way, we have been finding unexpected points of contact between the work of all those that have thus far collaborated with Crónica and what was once perhaps a small group has now grown to a much larger collective.

The mix we produced for this broadcast presents music that Crónica has released or is about to release, looking back to the first five years and simultaneously ahead to what we can only hope is a much longer time."

New release: Filare

Crónica is delighted to present Filare by Mosaique, its thirty-third installment, the second in the Unlimited Release Series.

In Jan Ferreira’s own words: “In Filare I attempted to produce sustained music which at the same time would contain movement and harmonic richness. Recordings of instruments (organ, sitar, bouzouki, harmonium, etc.) in different environments and excerpts of classical music are processed through a long chain of channels which have slight time intervals inbetween them so as to produce small phase differences. The sound is then recorded in a recursive process, e.g. the result of each recording was used as a departure point, and so on. Through repeated processing certain frequencies/overtones would cancel each other out and others would accumulate, so that progressively there would be an emphasis on certain overtones that would “crystallize”. These results are then eventually equalized, layered and transposed in whole tones as well as on a microtonal scale, so as to produce frequency “clashing” and thereby the desired movement. It was intended to create a sound that would have depth on several layers, emotionally as well as acoustically, without wanting to emphasize any of them in an exaggerated manner.

It seems to me that a great part of the beauty of modern electronic/electroacoustic music lies in its balance between technical finesse/complexity and the emotional nuances/subtleties that can thereby be achieved. In this light I’d like to contribute this album as one aesthetic possibility to a large ocean of to-be explored musical/acoustical possibilities.”

--

Tracklist:

1. Sophil
2. Vitral
3. Silence and Light
4. Aidon
5. Episteme
6. Archae
7. Dichron
8. Recursive

--

With Filare we begin the release of a Limited Series of original artworks, specially produced for each digital release. The Limited counterpart of the Unlimited Series begins with the release of DarkRoseSoundFlower, a certified signed and numbered limited edition of 10 photographic 30 x 30cm lambda prints, especially produced for Crónica by the Portuguese artist and label partner Pedro Tudela. For ordering, please see this page.

Crónicast 026, Tam, 15'11", 17.4MB

Crónicast 026 features Tam performing live in Passos Manuel, Porto.

--

A laptop and ideas. That’s the shortest and the best definition for Tam’s music.

Based in Porto, Tam explores the infinite possibilities conceded by electronic gadgets and computers. The styles presented are pretty vague and vast: House, Techno, Minimal, Ambient , Acoustic or Experimental, they all depend on the mood of the author.

Some very low-fi video work is often incorporated in the live shows. The visual work is focused mainly on landscape, the human figure and several pointless situations of our daily lives. For the “Natal dos Experimentais” live-act Tam recorded several field recordings and samples and played them randomly for about twenty minutes. Is it improvisation? Maybe...

This performance was recorded December 12, 2007.

Up, Down, Charm, Strange, Top, Bottom

We are delighted to present @c's Up, Down, Charm, Strange, Top, Bottom, Cronica's 31st installment.

Up, Down, Charm, Strange, Top, Bottom notes:

“Up, Down, Charm, Strange, Top, Bottom” is our seventh full-length release, and the third in Crónica. The four tracks in this CD are composed from studio, live and field recordings that span a period of five years in our work, influenced by the various collaborations we developed over that time. 61 and 62 were performed live in several venues and in various development versions since early 2006.

Some of the collaborators found their way into the compositions as “sampled guests”, as bits of sound collected from live performances or studio work. Their presence is both a testimonial of the crossing (or forking) paths and a hommage to those musicians that contributed to our ongoing work in progress.

Building a CD like this, a studio composition, is perhaps much like sculpting, constructing a fixed and closed relationship between parts; it is also like photographing, framing a certain composition from within its vaster surroundings. It is like editing a documentary, shifting the focus from the individual pieces, found or produced, towards their connections, balances and compositions. It sometimes feels like the work of a mechanic or a watchmaker, in which individual pieces are tooled to work in a much larger and complex system.

When working on “Up, Down, Charm, Strange, Top, Bottom”, we found ourselves between formats, between different possible models for the realization of this fixation of sound. What should a CD be? Should it be the registration of a piece (or of several pieces) in a canonic form? Should it be a device for the recreation of a multitude of pieces, where each playback may yield a new becoming of a composition, where each listening act, with its different, personalized and unique focus, shapes the sounds, combing them in individual interpretations, as when reading a poem out loud?

All representation is false, therefore, concrète music does not aim to represent or to convey anything in a romantic sense, using the music as a medium to transmit anything other than itself. Francastel: A work of art is not an imitation of reality: it cannot take the place of reality; a work of art does not excite the same sensations as nature. McLuhan: The medium is the message. Negroponte: The medium is not the message. @c: The message is the medium and the moment. The CD is not communicating a live performance or an idealized composition, rather, the CD is itself, and will become music each time it is played, to everyone and everywhere it is so.

“Up, Down, Charm, Strange, Top, Bottom” is one more step in finding our way in music, looking for something we can’t really define. Explorers, we. Finding through doing, acting and doing.

Täuschung

We are delighted to present Davor Mikan's Täuschung, Cronica's thirtieth installment and another harsh commentary in our artists (and ours) endless journey of kicking against the pricks. We hope you enjoy the ride as much as we do and feel free to shake those bones a bit, after all the heart of Täuschung is pop-music.

Täuschung notes:

These pieces were developed in the last four years. A mixture of algorithmic and handmade music. I am using generative graphic-tools together with granular systhesis to transform sound.

After 4 years, the distance to this music is completely lost. This paralyzes my thinking. When I try to have thoughts, they seem to be like a foreign substance. And totally out of place. By the way, also emotions. Finally I had searched my notes and correspondece of the last years for thoughts who are coherent with the development of this music. They are text tracks, not in the way of listening — as long as they are read, as a hint to the character of the space from out of which the music emerged.

“Who could survive physically without the spine of self-deception - and who should have interest in breaking it for the subject? But at the same time, the deception should be what it is - an illusion, which has to be figured out in case there are self-endangering enticements come from it.” Peter Sloterdijk, Sphären I

“Dark spots were coming into my inside, black fungus which were spreading more and more.” Fernando Pessoa, Das Buch der Unruhe

…spitefully behaving bodies of sound. They are denying the unfolding of inherent intelligence; they are acting against their being. A Chaos. Here the hearing aid is utterly familiar. A lot is getting lost — acustically masked, it doesn‘t make its way to the inner ear. What is not hearable, its vanished under the massif of sound. It is as if here the listening make the hearing impossible.

“Olga Neuwirth describes the musik for her “Bählamms Fest” as gestures which are leading into nowhere.” Davor Mikan, 2007

Davor Mikan lives and works in Vienna, where he creates music about failure, beauty, lust and delusion in the context of psychoacoustic effects and in a personal sense (self-delusion).
